Contrasts are not the least of those things in which Sicily abounds. So perhaps it is not surprising that this ancient island boasts one of Italy's most modern wine industries of that a region noted chiefly in the past for strong and often sweet amber Marsala and Moscato has rapicly switched the emphasis toward lighter, dryer wines - whites and reds.Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island, has more vineyards for wine than any other region. Production in recent years has reached awesome levels - frequently the greatest in volume among the regions. The westernmost province of Trapani alone turns out more wine than the entire regions of Tuscany or Piedmont or such wine nations as Hungary, Austria or Chile. But the proportion of DOC wine in Sicily's total is a mere 2.5 per cent and a major share of that is Marsala, which with some 22 million litres a year ranks among Italy's top ten DOCs in volume.

By contrast, a number of unclassivied "vini da tavola" are thriving. Increasingly prominent are the pale, faintly scented, delicately fruity whites which derive largely from native grapes such as Inzolia, Catarratto, Grecanico and Verdello. Such outsiders as Sauvignon and Chardonnay have also proved promising. Certain reds have achieved prominence, too, mainly those from such admired native varieties as Nero d'Avola (or Calabrese) and Nerello Mascalese and Perricone (or Pignatello). The most admired brands in Sicilian tables wines - Corvo-Duca di Salaparuta and Regaleali - do not qualify under any DOC. Yet Corvo's consistent quality in dry whites and reds from grapes selected throughout the island has made them prizewinners at home and abroad. Regaleali from the Tasca d'Almerita family estate high in the island's central hills, has been producing white, rose' and reds that have won international acclaim. The Region of Sicily distinguishes wines of consistent quality - whether DOC or not - with a Q, which appears on labels as a seal of approval. Sicilian wine has not enjoyed universal success, however. In an era of dwindling consumption world-wide, much of the island's production is either shipped away as blending wine or designated for distillation into industrial alcohol. The region's wine production - four-fifths of which is centred in cooperatives - has been gradually reduced as new emphasis has been given to premium quality. New methods of viticulture in the sunny, temperate hills are helping to realise wines of real character and individuality. Sicily has taken the lead in winemaking in the modern south as producers seem increasingly determined to live up to the promise that was so well known to the ancient Greeks.

Guido 2003 Solaia 2000 Antinori Solaia 2001 Antinori Solaia 2002 (100% Cabernet) Antinori Solaia 2003 Antinori History of Solaia Solaia, which means the 'sunny one' in Italian, is a 10 hectares (25 acres) southwest-facing vineyard planted 351-396 metres (1,150-1,300 feet) above sea-level on stony calcareous soil of marl and friable albarese rock. It is located at Santa Cristina, contiguous to the Tignanello vineyard, which is on the same property, in the Mercatale Val di Pesa zone of Chianti Classico. Antinori first produced a single-vineyard wine from these vines with the 1978 vintage (which was a limited release only in Italy); the initial blend was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, which was repeated in 1979. During following vintages, 20% Sangiovese was introduced and small adjustments were made (according to vintage) to the proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc used, to arrive at today's blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 20% Sangiovese. Solaia was not produced in the 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1992 vintages. The Domaine Marcel Deiss is located in Bergheim, near Ribeauvillé in Alsace . It is today managed by Jean Michel Deiss . The Deiss family settled in Bergheim in 1744 and made wine since that time . 27 hectares spread around Bergheim . Biodynamic viticulture since september 2003 , after years of organic farming techniques.[The picture above shows the village . Alsacian slopes and Vosges mountains are in my back . Mountains in the background are those of the Black Forest in Germany.]Marie Helène Cristofaro, oenologist at M. Deiss, gives us a detailed account of the way the vineyards as well as the grapes are the focus of the attention to reach the best quality in the wine. Good grapes makes working on the wine easier . Light filtration .Relatively slow Fermentation : 3 to 6 months . No fertilizers . The must (juice) is low on nitrogen, and the only yeast used are the ones present in the grapes' skin , the indigenous yeast . That's why fermentation is slow , wich in return brings rich aromas . Hand harvest .Yield is 25-30 hectoliters/hectare on "Grands Crus" . On "Appellation communale" yield is 45-50 hectos/hectare . To get a high quality juice , pressing is intentionally slow , wich is possible due to the high number of press machines here (relative to the size of the Domaine) . Grape juices will ferment slowly (6 months for a "rich" wine) in big wooden foudres . Wine will be fed by its own lees ; further "batonnage" will keep the lees in contact with the wine for a better exchange

93 points and a Cellar Selection designation from the Wine Spectator: "Beautiful aromas of raspberry and cedar follow through on the lush, full palate. It's intense and well crafted, with a long, rich finish. Drink now." (05/94) 90 points Robert Parker: "Although variable from bottle to bottle, this wine can be Guigal's best recent red Hermitage. Marcel Guigal believes it is the finest Hermitage made at this firm since 1955. I have followed the 1990 since I first tasted its component parts. It exhibits a nose of intense peppery, jammy, black-raspberry fruit intertwined with scents of smoke, vanillin, and spices. With full body, great depth of fruit, purity, and considerable tannin in the finish, it is already approachable because of its long aging in foudres and small barrels. This is a rich, thick, concentrated wine. Anticipated maturity: now-2009." (Rhone Book, 1997)
